So the two paramedics that worked on Kauri are our neighbors. They didn't know her name, and didn't know they needed to with the 4 kids there alert, but it was very difficult for them. Lance, came to see her in the hospital, with tears in his eyes, just wanting to see Kauri awake. A few weeks later he took us to the site and explained how it all was. Roger was her main paramedic. He had a very difficult time seeing all these kids in his ward. He said he was very scared with Kauri. Three different times she was in intubated to get her to start breathing again. He said she would stop breathing and her eyes would roll back in her head. With tears in his eyes he said when he put her on that air taxi, he didn't think we'd ever see her again. He said he's had people who have had to be intubated twice survive, but not three times.
They both said they thought her arm/shoulder was broken so horribly, because it was so distorted. It scared them. She would just say how bad her shoulder hurt after. Apparently one of the times she was intubated, she flipped her arm up to hit that thing from her mouth, and she popped a very dislocated shoulder back into place. Her shoulder was the most painful thing for a few weeks.
When we talked with him about her stopping breathing and eyes rolling back, Kauri told him about her experience with Gabe, telling her "good-bye". He said that one of the times she opened her eyes after she was back breathing, she said, "Gabe is dead."
It was a very emotional visit with this great man. He says he's not great, he was just doing his job, but we are forever grateful he was doing such a good job at his job. He saved Kauri. She has much left to do here, and he was a part of helping that to come to pass.
He said he was very scared and upset and had to take off 2 weeks from it all, because it was so hard on him.
