The event happened as some of the kids planned to go swimming that evening at Lar's Aunt and Uncle's house. Kauri asked if that would be alright. Mom and Dad left to go to a play. Two girls from the ward came over to watch a movie before it was time to go swim. One of the girls, Katie, said she wanted Cheesecake, and suggested going to Harmons to get some. Kauri asked Jarom to come, but he didn't want to. She didn't really want to go, but decided to anyway. While she was asking Jarom, the girls went outside and were knocking on Lars door to get him. He thought they were going around to get people to come to the pool party. While the 4 were driving down the street, Kauri told them to stop and pick up Gabe. She ran in to talk him into coming now. She spent some time talking to Kristin, his mom, and then they came out. Annika was babysitting across the street and saw Kauri and Gabe get into the car. She didn't like it, but didn't know what to do about. She knew mom wouldn't like Kauri going somewhere with those kids.
They had fun at Harmons. Katie found her $20 cheesecake. Gabe got his Coke. Gabe was texting Scott and they were going to go get him. After they left Harmons and and were heading to pick up Scott, Katie and Davy suggested going on dirt road before Scotts house on 1125 W. Gabe and Kauri both said they didn't want to, that they just wanted to pick up the Snows and go swimming.
(In the mean time Irene, Crystals mom was saying she should just go with Scott over, and if they didn't come soon, she'd take them. So Crystal called Kauri's phone. Annika answered it and it was at 6:43 pm. She said she was calling to see if Kauri was coming, and right then, she saw them pulling up and said, never mind).
So everyone was trying to decide who would get in the back, and who would sit where. Kauri was going to where Gabe was, and he stopped her saying no, he would sit there, and she should sit by Crystal. So Lars and Gabe got in the back, and Kauri sat behind Katie. They were only going 1 mile, to Lar's house, and it's just short streets, so Kauri just turned around and started talking to Gabe while Lars played on his phone.
They pulled out from the house and started going down Country Lane. The windows were rolled down, the music was playing and the girls in the front were being kind of silly. Scott and Crystal were just sitting there, and Kauri was talking to Gabe. Chrystal would talk to Kauri a bit, but Kauri didn't really know what she was saying.
All of the sudden Kauri realized the were going really fast on a dirt road, the music seemed really loud and the windows were down. Gabe said, "Whoa, lets just go swimming." Kauri yelled out, "Guys stop! Kids get killed goofing off and doing stupid things like this." Davy kind of waved her hand and was saying "Faster! Faster!"
All of the sudden Kauri remembers Davy looked at Katie when the bumps started. Kauri felt in a daze. The car swerved, then went sideways. Kauri closed her eyes and thought "I should have been wearing my seatbelt!" The next thing she remembers was waking up on the side of the road. She heard Katie screaming, saw Davy walking away, she held Lars hand, saw Gabe and that was it. She was out. The next time she woke up she was in the helicopter. Her head, shoulder and back hurt so bad.
The accident happened about 6:50 pm
